Dominican National Brewery

The Dominican National Brewery was established in 1929. Nowadays the National Brewery of the Dominican Republic is a clear leader on a market with about 88% of the production. The interesting fact is that from 1987 to 2009 the part of the National Brewery of the Dominican Republic was also the brewery called “Bohemia”.

When we searched for the name – “Bohemia” we found out that it could be related to imports of raw materials from the Czech Republic since 1983.

The National brewery currently produces approximately 3.5 million hl of beer of the following brands:

Presidente

Presidente light

Bohemia especial

Bohemia light

The One

Presidente and Bohemia especial can be considered as a lager beers. Beers called “light” are classic draft beers. The One is the beer which taste is similar to Corona.

The best-selling beer is currently Presidente light, with a market share of about 55%, followed by the Presidente. Bohemia’s beer market share is around 25%.

In our opinion Presidente is a more fermented, less bitter beer, which, in terms of flavors and aromas, can not be denied anything. If you order the bottle of Presidente you will usually get it very cold, which will not allow you to taste or to smell it to identify the right taste. Even after warming it to a degustation temperature of 10-12° C, however, the impression of beer remains the same – not good, not bad. The taste of Bohemia beer is bitter and fuller and thus in our opinion more interesting.

Brewery imports malt from America and Canada and hops from America. Besides malt, about 35% of surrogates – cane sugar and corn are used to produce beer. There are two brewers in the national brewery with a capacity of around 800hl. The main fermentation takes place in tanks, short ripening in lager tanks.

The National brewery of the Dominican Republic has five bottling lines. 94% of the beer is filled into returnable bottles, the rest to cans and beer keg casks. Approximately 5% of beer, mostly Presidente – which can be found for example in Spain, is exported abroad.

The current majority owner of the Dominican National Brewery is Brazilian Brahma, one of the most famous brands in the beer industry.

Beside beers from the Dominican Republic, nowadays in the Dominican Republic you can easily buy beers from all around the world. From the Czech ones you can find Pilsner Urguell, Budweiser Budvar (here is sold under the name “Bud”) and the Náchodský Primátor.
