Santiago de los 30 Caballeros

Santiago de los 30 Caballeros is the second largest city in the Dominican Republic. It lies in the valley of the most fertile Antil Valley – in the Cibao Valley. Santiago is a modern, vibrant city and is the main shopping center of the northern area of the Dominican Republic. Unlike Santo Domingo, you will not find dirty neighborhoods and garbage on the streets, on the contrary – when you walk through the city, more likely you will feel like being in one of the Spanish cities than in Latin America.

There is not much to see and visit for tourists here. The main business street is Calle del Sol, which leads to the Monumento a los Heroes. The Monument was built on a top of the hill on order of the dictatorial ruler – Trujillo. With its high of 67 meters its a dominant of Santiago. An interesting place to visit might be for you the Leon Jimenez cigarette factory, where the guide will explain you the process of tobacco leaf processing – from its collecting to final production – hand-wrapped cigarettes. Leon Jiménez and Aurora brands have a long tradition in the country and are among the best in the world.
