Bayaguana

The city of Bayaguana was founded in 1606 after the Spanish colonists destroyed the villages of Bajaja and Yaguana. The people from these ruined villages have moved out and founded the new city – the city of Bayaguana. The village is located in the southeastern part of the Dominican Republic in the province of Monta Plaza and has about 21,000 inhabitants. The city with its population is the 32nd largest city in the Dominican Republic.

Livestock farming, rice and pineapple predominates in the Bayaguan economy. We must not forget the sugar cane plantations. Nearby we can visit the Comate Waterfall, which is named after the river of the same name into which it flows. Comate Waterfall is the reason why this place is favourite place to visit. Here you can enjoy a bath in warm and very clean water.

The city is part of a large national park, the Los Haitises National Park.

At the end and the beginning of the year, the festival takes place in the city. For this occasion the city is visited by believers from across Bayaguan who come here to worship Christ and their faith in him. After this cheerful festival, some of them meet outside the city to sell on the streets a variety of goods and animals – especially bulls. The proceeds of the sale are then brought to the church, which then uses the funds again for similar events.

Another “fiesta” that attracts many tourists to the city is a celebration of San Juan Baptista. This is a traditional festival accompanied by folk music and traditional games such as jumping in a bag and donkey’s running.
