MAMAJUANA

Mamajuana [mamahuana]

Originally, like non-alcoholic herbal tea, the Mamajuana was used by autochtons of the Hispaniola – the Tainas. The alcohol was added to the recipe after the Colomb period.

Mamajuana is a delicious liquor prepared from rum, wine and flavored by a strictly controlled combination of endemic herbs, spices, roots and honey. For centuries it has been part of the traditional Dominican culture.

You can buy Mamajuanu even ready to drink or in the form of dried herbs, spices, roots and bark in a bottle or in a sachet, and finish the preparation of the drink at home by pouring the red wine, rum and honey into the dried mixture.

However, the mixes for the preparation of Mamajuana and the Mamajuana “ready to use” are not the same. The bark is a source of bitterness, so it is recommended to leave the mixture for three weeks bathed in red wine. After three weeks wine is poured out and the mixture is drained. The next step is up to each user. Someone does the mamayuan only from the rum itself, someone prefer more wine. The same is with sweetening. Each bottle thus can be original.

It is said that Mamajuana has the medicinal effects and acts as an aphrodisiac.
